Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, in 1930. He developed a passion for flying at a young age, and he earned his pilot's license at the age of 16. After graduating from high school, Armstrong attended Purdue University, where he studied aeronautical engineering. He graduated in 1955 and joined the U.S. Navy, where he flew combat missions in the Korean War.

In 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut. He was part of the Gemini program, which conducted a series of spacewalks and other experiments in preparation for the moon landing. In 1969, Armstrong was chosen to command the Apollo 11 mission, which would be the first manned landing on the moon.

On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon. Armstrong's famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," are etched in history.

After the moon landing, Armstrong continued to work for NASA. He served as the deputy administrator of NASA from 1971 to 1975, and he later became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

Armstrong died in 2012 at the age of 82. He is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of the 20th century.
